2017-2018 Concert Band Placement Audition Information

17-18 Concert Band Excerpts (PDF)

General Information

  • All students in grades 9, 10, 11 who wish to participate in Concert Band next year MUST audition
  • Concert Band is the CORE of our program at Lakota East  – all other ensembles are successful because our concert bands are successful.
  • THIS year we have 3 Main Campus Bands – we anticipate the same organization for next year
    • Symphonic Winds (AA)
    • 2 Symphonic Bands (B)
  • The auditions help us to determine which band is the best fit for you.  We have a “place” for everyone!
  • Auditions will take place in the Band Room at the Main Campus on the dates listed below.
  • Auditions begin at 3:00 and you are free to leave after you play.
  • Simply select “Concert Band” when registering for classes.  We will let the office know which section of band you should be in after the placement auditions.
  • Bands Placements for 2017-2018 School Year will be posted prior to Spring Break.

Audition Dates

  • Clarinets & Bass Clarinets – Monday, March 20th
  • Trumpets – Tuesday, March 21st
  • Flutes & Oboes – Wednesday, March 22nd
  • Trombones – Thursday, March 23rd
  • Percussion – Monday, March, 27th
  • Horns, Euphoniums, Tubas – Tuesday, March 28th
  • All Saxophones & Bassoons – Wednesday, March 29th
  • Make-Up Auditions – Thursday, March 30th

Audition Expectations

The brass/woodwind audition will consist of 3 components:

  • A chromatic scale – lowest to highest note
  • As many Major Scales as you can successfully play starting on Concert C going around the circle.
  • Prepared Piece Options
    • Option A – If you took a class “A” solo to contest
      • Play both a technical and lyrical portion of your solo
    • Option B – If you took a class “B” or “C” solo to contest
      • Play a technical portion of your solo & and Etude #77
    • Option C – If you didn’t take a solo to contest
      • Play both the technical (Etude #77) and lyrical (Etude #27) etudes provided

Percussion audition will consist of 3 components:

  • Long Roll Rudiment on the Snare Drum
  • Snare Drum Excerpt Options
    • Option A – If you took a solo to contest, play 32 bars of your solo
    • Option B – If you didn’t take a solo, play Audition Etude (#25)
  • Mallet Excerpt Options
    • Option A – If you took a solo to contest, play 32 bars of your solo
    • Option B – If you didn’t take a solo to contest, play Audition Etude (#77)
