Lakota East High School Jazz Band Course Description

2 semesters / 1 credit / Fee Required

Jazz Band is open to all students in grades 9-12 provided their instrument fits the ensemble’s “big band” instrumentation. The jazz band class will reinforce, further develop and refine the fundamentals of jazz through playing an instrument in a large group setting while performing a variety of jazz music literature at a level appropriate to the jazz music students’ abilities. Performances outside of school hours are part of this course, attendance is mandatory and is a part of the course grade. Other than guitarists, bassists and pianists, members must first be enrolled in a Concert Band.

Eastside Jazz Ensemble

Lakota East High School’s most advanced jazz band is the Eastside Jazz Ensemble. The Eastside Jazz Ensemble is open to any jazz band student in grades 10-12, but is typically made up of juniors and seniors. In addition to regular school performances, the Eastside Jazz Ensemble frequently participates in national and/or university jazz festivals. Past performances include the Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition and Festival (New York City), the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival (Monterey, CA), the University of North Texas Jazz Festival (Addison, TX) and the OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) State Professional Conference.

East 2 O’Clock Jazz Ensemble

Lakota East High School Main Campus jazz band students comprise the East 2 O’clock Jazz Ensemble big band. The East 2 O’clock Jazz Ensemble performs at various Lakota East High School jazz band concerts, the Swing Dance and Cool Jazz ‘n Hotcakes. The East 2 O’clock Jazz Ensemble performs annually at the Beavercreek Jazz Festival.
