The History of the Lakota East High School Band Program

In the fall of 1997, the Lakota East High School Main Campus opened its doors. At that time, Band Director William Thomas and Assistant Band Director Robert Tanis had one 87-member, class B concert band, a 96-member marching band and an after-school jazz band.

Today, Lakota East High School consists of two campuses, the Freshman Campus for grade 9 and the Main Campus for students grades 10-12. Combined, the Lakota East High School Freshman and Main Campuses have five year-round concert bands (Symphonic Winds, two Symphonic Bands, and two Freshman Bands), three year-round jazz bands, and a nearly 200-member marching band. At the Main Campus level, band members audition and are placed into one of the three symphonic bands and jazz ensembles based on ability and musical maturity.Concert and jazz bands meet daily the entire school year.

Lakota East High School’s Marching Thunderhawks marching band is an extracurricular option with practices beginning in the summer. The Marching Thunderhawks perform at high school football games, OMEA and BOA contests throughout the fall.

All Lakota East High School bands have consistently received superior ratings at both OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) District and State Adjudicated Events. Lakota East High School band members audition to participate in the OMEA District 13 Honor Bands. Each music student is encouraged to experience the process of preparing and auditioning for the OMEA Honor Bands.
